What's the difference between an orange? A rabbit, because a vest has no sleeves. I always get funny looks when I do that bit. Too few Monty Python fans I expect. Without getting too pedantic, the question, and answer, are a portrayal of the ridiculous. In case you missed it.
What's the difference between a liberal democrat? Depends on who's asking the question. Justice Sotomayor has shown the propensity for the liberal two-step. She's just not that good at it. In fact, I'd have to say she sucks at it. Believe me, that's an anomaly too. Being Puerto Rican myself I've met few who can't dance.
For those who have not been paying attention, Sotomayor has been quoted repeatedly as stating that her being a"wise Latina" would confer upon her better judicial decision making abilities than a white male. That was not taken out of context nor was it one isolated statement she made while she was slamming Mojitos. She said it repeatedly and in front of large groups of people. Now I know that since she said it in the presence of other latinos she didn't expect it to come back and bite her in the tushie. Now that she's up for the SCOTUS position vacated by Justice Souter, she's trying to Moonwalk like Michael.
I also know that she, like many "nuanced" liberals, expects us to be too stupid to figure out what she's doing now. Not only that, but I'm clear she's simply daring the GOP to go ahead and try and shoot down her nomination. What with her being a woman and a Latina (a wise one at that) with the uber-popular Obama standing behind her. After all, his tack of attacking people who disagreed with him by calling them racists (subtly as he does) worked like a charm didn't it? In fact, it's still working! So vote against Sotomayor's nomination and stand the chance of alienating that all powerful "Hispanic" voting bloc.
Here's the thing, it infuriates me off when politicians do that. It, in fact, should offend all Hispanics. It's an insult to our intelligence to assume that we vote like lemmings.
The sad thing is, like blacks, for the most part, that's exactly how we vote. Besides, I personally know many Latinas who would agree wholeheartedly with Sotomayor's assessment of her judicial decision making abilities. Of course none of them are judges. They just think they are.
I don't know if any of you have watched the SCOTUS confirmation hearings of other justices who have made it to the court, but you can be sure that neither Thomas, Roberts or Alito had to eat their words during their confirmation hearings. In fact, as in the case of the travesty of justice that were the Bork hearings, the fact that they stand by their convictions ofen will result in them not getting nominated to the court.
So here's what Sonia's doing. She's telling the Senate exactly what she expects they want to hear so she can just get on the bench and start dispensing her Latina wisdom. Don't pay any attention to all the public statements she's made in the past. This is what she really means. And definitely dont pay any attention to the decisions she's made that ultimately were reversed by the SCOTUS. Now that she's going to be on the bench this will no longer be a problem will it?
When people ask me how I could possibly hold my nose and pull the lever for McCain instead of making some idiotic statement by writing in the candidate I truly wanted as President this is what I tell them: three justices on the Supreme Court who are possibly going to retire in the next four years.
What guarantee did I have that McCain would nominate a conservative? The odds were significantly better than anyone Obama is going to select. His very first selection has confirmed exactly that!
Mmmmm hopenchange! Tastes like chicken.
